The fuchsias are a species-rich genus in the evening primrose family Onagraceae. Native to the warm regions of South America and Mexico, the fuchsia reached Europe in the 18th century. The first specimens were discovered by the Franciscan Father Charles Plumier in 1695 on the island of Santo Domingo. In honour of the 16th century German botanist Leonhard Fuchs, he named the plant Fuchsia.
