The centre of the North Island is dominated by an active volcanic and thermal area. Due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Roturua is New Zealand's geothermal heart with many geysers, mud pools and hot springs. In the Whakarewarewa Valley of Te Puia is the 30 m high Pohutu Geyser, which erupts several times a day. The Orakei Korako Geothermal Park has the most active geysers of all geothermal parks in New Zealand. Being able to see powerful geothermal phenomena up close is one of New Zealand's greatest tourist attractions.
